  1. Keri says:

What is one food you thought you’d miss when you went vegan, but don’t?
I thought I’d be casting jealous glances at anything covered in cheese, but I don’t even take notice.

What is a food or dish you wouldn’t touch as a child, but enjoy now?
Marinara! Or any tomato based sauce or soup for that matter. I ate plain, naked noodles.

What vegan dish or food you feel like you “should” like, but don’t?
I don’t really do smoothies. I know they’re practically “a must” around here, and it isn’t that I don’t like them, but I just like to eat my calories over drinking them. I tried!

What beverage do you consume the most of on any given day?
Water, water, water. Not because I feel like I should, but because I love ice cold water.

What dish are you “famous” for making or bringing to gatherings?
Everything. I’m “famous” for doing the whole meal. I am the chocolate chip cookie fairy, though.

Do you have any self-imposed food rules (like no food touching on the plate or no nuts in sweets)?
I’ll admit it. I don’t like my different foods to touch. I won’t flip out or not eat it if they do, but I like to enjoy the noncombined flavors of each dish.

What’s one food or dish you tend to eat too much of when you have it in your home?
I’m not a big impulse eater, but don’t give me a bag of kettle corn if you expected any back.

What ingredient or food do you prefer to make yourself despite it being widely available prepackaged?
Bread, seitan, nut butters… actually, if I know *how* to make it homemade, I prefer it that way.

What ingredient or food is worth spending the extra money to get “the good stuff”?
Olive oil, pickles, nondairy milks.. my philosophy is if you aren’t going to eat/enjoy it or what you made with it, you aren’t really saving any money.

Are you much of a snacker? What are your favorite snacks?
I’m actually not, but I make a lot of snacks for my little man! Our favorites are nut and dried fruit “trail mixes”, granola, fruit, peanut butter on celery, or cereals.

What are your favorite vegan pizza toppings?
    Vegan ham and pineapple!

What is your favorite vegetable? Fruit?
My favorite vegetable is probably broccoli or fresh green beans. The only one I don’t like alone is green peas, but I like in dishes. My favorite fruit is (all of them, but) honeycrip apples!

What is the best salad dressing?
    Creamy poppyseed or Italian.

What is your favorite thing to put on toasted bread?
Peanut butter! As a kid I would have said cinnamon toast- margarine, cinnamon, and sugar.

What kind of soup do you most often turn to on a chilly day or when you aren’t feeling your best?
Anything chunky. I love miso, hot and sour soup.. hearty, flavorful, and brothy is my go-to.

What is your favorite cupcake flavor? Frosting flavor?
Vanilla cupcakes with vanilla vegan cream cheese icing!

What is your favorite kind of cookie?
Cookies are my favorite thing to bake! You can’t go wrong with chocolate chip, but everything I’ve tried from VCIYCJ has been fantastic.

What is your most-loved “weeknight meal”?
Well, I’m not the norm because I rarely make the same thing twice, but pasta dishes are great in a hurry.

What is one dish or food you enjoy, but can’t get anyone else in your household to eat?
It used to be avocado, but since I have a slight sensitivity I haven’t been purchaing them as often. Kale! The little man likes it in juice form, but I’m determined to spread the kale-love around here.

How long, in total, do you spend in the kitchen on an average day?
Too long… a couple of hours with all meals combined, maybe? I’m a multi-tasker, though, so I’m probably not just cooking a meal. I often have the little man at my feet drawing, making letters out of random things he finds, or making a pretend meal of his own in the spare pots.

  6. katerina says:

What is one food you thought you’d miss when you went vegan, but don’t?
I thought I’d constantly crave cheese, but I only miss it occasionally.

What is a food or dish you wouldn’t touch as a child, but enjoy now?
Funny thing is, I ate everything as a child, and now, as a vegan, I’m a really picky eater.

What vegan dish or food you feel like you “should” like, but don’t?
Seitan. I just can’t stand any sort of fake meat, but I love tofu and tempeh.

What beverage do you consume the most of on any given day?
Earl Grey tea with almond milk and carbonated water.

What dish are you “famous” for making or bringing to gatherings?
Vegan caesar salad — even omnivores rave and tell me it’s better than traditional caesar salad.

Do you have any self-imposed food rules (like no food touching on the plate or no nuts in sweets)? No. I just try to eat as few processed foods as possible. I like making everything myself from scratch.

What’s one food or dish you tend to eat too much of when you have it in your home? Nuts, mainly almonds or brazil nuts. I could snack on them all day long.

What ingredient or food do you prefer to make yourself despite it being widely available prepackaged? Pickles. My homemade ones are so much cheaper and yummier. Also, salad dressing.

What ingredient or food is worth spending the extra money to get “the good stuff”? Vinegar for salad dressing.

Are you much of a snacker? What are your favorite snacks? I try not to snack, but love nuts (see above).

What are your favorite vegan pizza toppings? My local, non-vegan pizza place has a Siciliana with no cheese, but eggplant, olives, capers, and anchovies. I just ask for the anchovies to be replaces with arugula and it’s the best pizza ever. Don’t miss the cheese at all.

What is your favorite vegetable? Fruit? Can’t pick one favorite vegetable, but favorites include kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, green beans, and acorn squash. For fruit, strawberries and raspberries.

What is the best salad dressing? Classic French Dijon mustard dressing. Very versatile, and creamy while still vegan.

What is your favorite thing to put on toasted bread? Marmite.

What kind of soup do you most often turn to on a chilly day or when you aren’t feeling your best? This roasted tomato soup: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/27/dining/271mrex.html

What is your favorite cupcake flavor? Frosting flavor?
Not much of a cupcake person, but chocolate all the way.

What is your favorite kind of cookie? My homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with almonds and dried cranberries.

What is your most-loved “weeknight meal”? This time of year, pumpkin/squash and chickpea curry. I make a big batch and it lasts for days. In the summer, a couple of baked potatoes and a giant everything salad.

What is one dish or food you enjoy, but can’t get anyone else in your household to eat? Beets.

How long, in total, do you spend in the kitchen on an average day?
Probably an hour on average, less on weekdays but a little more on weekends.

Seitan. I put it in everything.

What ingredient or food do you prefer to make yourself despite it being widely available prepackaged?

What ingredient or food is worth spending the extra money to get “the good stuff”?
    Fresh spices rather than dried.

What is your favorite vegetable? Fruit?

Broccoli and tofu stir-fried in dark Chinese sauce or Thai peanut sauce.

What is one dish or food you enjoy, but can’t get anyone else in your household to eat?
Ginger. I love it in anything, but wife-unit thinks it reeks.

How long, in total, do you spend in the kitchen on an average day?
Two hours or so, but just because I mess around experimenting with stuff.

  15. Vegun Chef says:

Thanks for the survey! Mine is up for my Vegan MoFo #4 post!

  16. Kelly says:

I’m totally stealing this for one of my posts while I’m on my work trip this weekend! Thanks. :)

  17. Melanie says:

    Fun survey!

What is one food you thought you’d miss when you went vegan, but don’t?
I didn’t think I would miss a particular food as much as the ease of being non-vegan. Being vegan isn’t as easy for me as most other vegans I know because I’m a super picky eater and I HATE to cook.

What is a food or dish you wouldn’t touch as a child, but enjoy now?
Vegetables. I was a meat-and-potatoes girl all the way.

What vegan dish or food you feel like you “should” like, but don’t?
Tofu, tempeh, seitan, non-dairy milks and meat substitutes like Gardein. I don’t even like Daiya!

What beverage do you consume the most of on any given day?
    Water!

What dish are you “famous” for making or bringing to gatherings?
Back in the day before I was just a Metro ride away from Sticky Fingers, I used to have mad baking skills. My most highly acclaimed creation was a snickerdoodle and maple cream cookie sandwich.

Do you have any self-imposed food rules (like no food touching on the plate or no nuts in sweets)?
I don’t like savory and sweet items combined. My meals have to consist of one or the other.

What’s one food or dish you tend to eat too much of when you have it in your home?
    Definitely sweets.

What ingredient or food do you prefer to make yourself despite it being widely available prepackaged?
Does grinding coffee beans at Whole Foods count? Otherwise, I can’t think of anything I would rather make myself. However, if I had the patience for cooking, I’d probably make mashed potatoes from scratch.

What ingredient or food is worth spending the extra money to get “the good stuff”?
I am a total food snob when it comes to guacamole, root beer, and maple syrup and will gladly spend a few extra dollars on those items.

Are you much of a snacker? What are your favorite snacks?
Oh yes. I like salty snacks like wild rice sticks, garlic sesame sticks, mixed nuts, and spring rolls.

What are your favorite vegan pizza toppings?
Spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, roasted garlic, and pine nuts.

What is your favorite vegetable? Fruit?
I’m a fan of anything in the dark leafy green family as long as it’s seasoned just right, and I’m quite fond of Brussels sprouts. I don’t like most fruit, but I don’t think I could turn down a tasty organic strawberry or black grapes.

What is the best salad dressing?
    Olive oil and vinegar.

What is your favorite thing to put on toasted bread?
    Mashed potatoes.

What kind of soup do you most often turn to on a chilly day or when you aren’t feeling your best?
I like Vegetable Garden’s organic tomato and spinach soup, but if I could find a creamy potato soup, I’d prefer that.

What is your favorite cupcake flavor? Frosting flavor?
Lemon or vanilla cupcakes with strawberry frosting.

What is your favorite kind of cookie?
A plain sugar cookie works for me!

What is your most-loved “weeknight meal”?
A grilled vegetable and pesto sandwich that I buy from a local, very vegan-friendly grocery store. If I lived close enough to Maoz, an all-vegetarian falafel place, I’d probably stop there every night.

What is one dish or food you enjoy, but can’t get anyone else in your household to eat?
My other half is repulsed by guacamole. And I can’t think of any green vegetable other than broccoli that he’ll eat.

How long, in total, do you spend in the kitchen on an average day?
As little time as possible. I’d starve if I didn’t have a microwave and a toaster.
