VegNews Anniversary And Vegan Book Club

July 3, 2010 by Keri

I have a bit of the literature side of vegan to share tonight!  I was so excited when my VegNews came on Thursday; it’s the 10th anniversary special collector’s edition (they’re all collector’s editions to me!) and I know a few of us have been waiting by our mailboxes to turn those pages.  To celebrate, they officially changed their header from VegetarianNEWSFOODPLANETTRAVELBUZZ to VeganNEWSFOODPLANETTRAVELBUZZ.  And we all know anything is instantly better once deemed vegan, of course.

The switch from vegetarian to vegan

In other VegNews, they’ve also started a book club.  And since I love all things vegan and books, I decided to play along!  The first book is Mad Cowboy by Howard Lyman, and the discussion begins on Monday with the first three chapters.  If you’re looking to get in some summer reading you should check it out too.  I’m sure I’ll do a short review once I’ve finished the book.

Vegan Book Club

Also on the vegan text train, I just got my copy of Vegan on the Cheap.  I’m really excited to start trying recipes since it’s boasting meals as low as $0.50 per serving.  I’m not sure what to start with, so if you have this cookbook I’d love to know your favorites.  It would be great to learn to cook in a more affordable way, especially since, as I’ve mentioned, when I see a produce section I just kind of lose consciousness and go crazy.  Having cheap recipes in mind might slow me down. Might.

I have quite a few meals to share as well, so I’ll follow this up with the edibles either later tonight or in the morning.  I hope everyone is having a great weekend.  Today is my grandma’s 71st birthday, so even though she doesn’t get on the computer much, Happy Birthday!, just in case.  My grandma writes down my website to people she catches buying Boca Burgers in the grocery store; how awesome is that?!  Actually, all of my family is really supportive of IET, but see, now I’m just rambling when I was trying to get working on the food post!

Vegan on the Cheap is a GREAT cookbook! I tried the French Lentil Chili the other night and just LOVED it . . . Just be careful — cayenne pepper and chili powder are not the same thing (I learned that cooking this recipe). 😉 Ha ha.
