Vegan Vanilla Ice Cream And A Vegan MoFo Survey
Good ol’ vegan vanilla ice cream. I haven’t come across too many people who will turn down the sweet simplicity of vanilla. When you get into specific flavors people get picky, but you can pretty much guarantee crowd approval when you have vanilla, or better yet, vanilla with a giant toppings buffet! Yesterday, despite the chilly weather, I cracked open my copy of Lick It to whip up a quart of homemade vanilla ice cream (page 10). The vegan ice cream recipes in this book are so delicious, and the vanilla is no exception. For Christmas, I’m planning on breaking up vegan candy canes and mixing them into this vanilla recipe for my favorite holiday treat, peppermint ice cream!
I found this Vegan MoFo survey from years ago, and since this is my first year participating, I thought I’d go ahead and fill it out!
1. Favorite non-dairy milk?
I don’t actually drink non-dairy milk often, if ever, because I’m a huge water addict. If you find me drinking something other than pitchers of water, it’s probably my grandma’s iced tea. For recipes, I usually use almond milk, but I always keep soy on hand just in case, because sometimes it’s necessary for recipes calling for vegan “buttermilk”.
2. What are the top 3 dishes/recipes you are planning to cook?
Oh boy, I haven’t planned the entire month out yet, but aside from my usual plethora of cookbook recipes, I’m planning on making some fun cupcakes, cookies, and holiday snacks.
3. Topping of choice for popcorn?
My go to popcorn is coated in nutritional yeast, sea salt, black pepper, and a pinch of cayenne!
4. Most disastrous recipe/meal failure?
Hmmm… that would probably have to be a crock pot Russian seitan recipe I tested a few months ago. It was actually inedible, and I’ve never had that happen! The seitan was gooey and spongy… I’m really not sure what happened, but I was probably at fault.
5. Favorite pickled item?
6. How do you organize your recipes?
I actually organize most of them here on I Eat Trees, but I do have a folder filled with all of my own recipe “keepers”.
7. Compost, trash, or garbage disposal?
Is dog not an option? It really depends on what it is, but if there are nontoxic, healthy leftovers on someone’s plate, they go to Dixie. I don’t have a compost yet, and I’m guilty of using the disposal quite a bit.
8. If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 foods…what would they be (don’t worry about how you’ll cook them)?
Right now I would say seitan pot roast, mashed potatoes, and chocolate chip cookies, but my response for that first item would change frequently. The mashed potatoes and chocolate chip cookies are a sure thing. Throw in a gallon of iced tea and welcome me to my new island home!
9. Fondest food memory from your childhood?
When my grandma made mashed potatoes, it made my day. Heck, it still does, and ever since I’ve been vegan she’s made them with Earth Balance and soymilk for the holidays, when she knows I’ll to be home. And no one makes iced tea better than Grandma, either. We can all try to do it the exact same way she does, and it simply isn’t the same.
10. Favorite vegan ice cream?
11. Most loved kitchen appliance?
12. Spice/herb you would die without?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. Oh wait, that’s Simon & Garfunkel’s grocery list.. I love rosemary.
13. Cookbook you have owned for the longest time?
The Joy of Vegan Baking. For a long time, I thought I didn’t even need cookbooks. Now look at me!
14. Favorite flavor of jam/jelly?
15. Favorite vegan recipe to serve to an omni friend?
16. Seitan, tofu, or tempeh?
17. Favorite meal to cook (or time of day to cook)?
I love to make all kinds of things, but my favorites are either very simple, like dried pastas and pizza, or very time-consuming, like handmade stuffed pastas or pretty desserts. My favorite time of day to cook is early afternoon because the lighting is perfect for photographs and I’m not yet worn out from the day!
18. What is sitting on top of your refrigerator?
A porcelain angel from my Great-Aunt Linda’s collection she gave me shortly before she passed away. You could also probably find a few past menu plans up there, out of view.
19. Name 3 items in your freezer without looking.
Ice, the ice cream I posted above, and a loaf of bread. My freezer is really bare right now.
20. What’s on your grocery list?
I haven’t made one out for next week yet, so it will depend on the menu I plan tomorrow! I know kale will be on there! Kale is always on the list.
21. Favorite grocery store?
Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.
22. Name a recipe you’d love to veganize, but haven’t yet.
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about caramel desserts, but haven’t veganized any yet.
23. Food blog you read the most (besides Isa’s because I know you check it everyday). Or maybe the top 3?
I have so many favorite blogs, but if I’m choosing 3 off the top of my head… Have Cake, Will Travel, Healthy. Happy. Life., and Cute and Delicious. Finding Vegan isn’t a blog, but it’s the vegan site I check the most. It’s many amazing blogs all wrapped into one pretty package.
24. Favorite vegan candy/chocolate?
My favorite chocolate bars, and I haven’t tried many, are the Go Max Go Foods Candy Bars. As for other candy, I really enjoy Surf Sweets gummy worms.
25. Most extravagant food item purchased lately?
I haven’t purchased any “lately”, because a bottle lasts such a long time, but I looove truffle oil, both white and black.
