Vegan Powdered Sugar

February 12, 2010 by Keri

This is just a quick post because in my last recipe post I used powdered sugar and a friend asked me if powdered sugar is vegan.  Most bagged powdered sugar from your local grocery store is not actually vegan, as it is made from bone-char sugar.  Many vegans consider things like this a lost battle for the time being and purchase these items, but if you’re not one of them vegan powdered sugar is done easily enough.  In an electric coffee grinder, granulated vegan sugar can be turned to light, fluffy powdered sugar, perfect for toppings or use in recipes. This is also handy for any baker, vegan and non-vegan alike, who has run out of powdered sugar mid-recipe and doesn’t want to run out to the store.  I hope this helps!

    How simple is THAT?!?

Thanks so much. Every once in a while, I come up with some vegan recipe where I’d like to use a little powdered sugar, and I’ve been unable to.

    ‘Til now.

Seriously? Not Vegan Powdered Sugar??? Hmm…. You learn something new every day!

  3. Vegmom says:

Shewww… OK mine says Vegan, purchased at health food store… you scared me for a second…

  4. Keri says:

Aww, I didn’t mean to scare you. Glad yours was vegan!

Glad it was helpful, Susie! I rarely have powdered sugar on hand so it’s nice to be able to just “make some” on demand.

  5. Jenn says:

Great tip. I usually buy the vegan kind (Woodstock Farms makes a good organic vegan powdered sugar) but this is a great idea for a frosting emergency.

  6. Amy says:

I’d heard before that you can do that, but I’ve never tried it before. Totally will now – thanks!

  7. Keri says:

Exactly, frosting emergencies! 🙂 Or powdered sugar on waffles emergencies!

    Glad it was helpful!

i don’t think of powdered sugar being made with bone char as a lost battle – i do go out of my way to purchase vegan powdered sugar (and vegan sugar) because sugar that uses bone char isn’t vegan. i like that you posted about making your own powdered sugar – that’s awesome!

I need to try this again! I did once, a long time ago, when I had a crappy blender & haven’t tried again because the results weren’t great. Thanks for the reminder to give it another go. Yours looks so light & fluffy!

I would like to express thanks to this writer just for bailing me out of such a crisis. Right after browsing throughout the internet and getting tricks which were not helpful, I thought my life was well over. Living without the presence of solutions to the difficulties you have resolved all through your report is a critical case, as well as the kind which could have in a wrong way affected my entire career if I hadn’t come across your web blog. Your primary competence and kindness in controlling the whole thing was excellent. I am not sure what I would have done if I had not discovered such a solution like this. I am able to at this moment relish my future. Thanks for your time very much for this professional and sensible guide. I will not think twice to refer your web page to any person who requires direction about this subject.
