Vegan BBQ Almonds and The Salad Monster

April 6, 2010 by Keri

When I was young, you could have never convinced me I’d miss my hometown.  I thought I couldn’t wait to get out of there! Last night we came back to our current town, after spending the weekend in my hometown, and the three hour drive is always a little tearful.  I usually tell myself that it’s because the town I’m coming back to is so much worse, but the truth is I miss my family and trying to fit catching up with them into a couple of days is tough.  But to be fair, there is better food and shopping there!  Anyway, for the drive I picked up some snacks, including the Blue Diamond Habanero BBQ almonds I read about on Cooking For A Vegan Lover.  Yum, I’m so glad Lindsay blogged about these because they are so tasty!

On the way out of town, I stopped by a local health food store to pick up a few things including nutritional yeast, brown rice syup, and tahini, but I also grabbed a Suncoat vegan liquid eye liner and Beauty Without Cruelty vegan mascara.  I really like the mascara, but the eye liner turned out to be not so fabulous.  Maybe I just got a dried out well, but it is rather dry and difficult to apply smoothly.  Oh well, maybe someday I’ll find a good one!

This morning I pulled out an Elmo coloring book that my son had received as a gift and opened it, only to find a picture of Cookie Monster devouring a bowl of salad.  Since when does cookie monster eat salad?  I thought he sustained himself solely on cookies from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar! It doesn’t even look like a cookie salad.  There are various pages of the monster formerly known as Cookie eating healthy foods throughout the book, but I haven’t come across one of him plowing through any sweets yet.  Well, if he’s turned over a new leaf, I think the Salad Monster would probably approve of my lunch.

After an entire weekend of eating way too much delicious food, I really wasn’t hungry at all come lunch time.  I decided to throw a salad in my Ninja and call it a smoothie just so that I had some calories to go out and play on.  I tossed in kale, collared greens, an apple, and water to make my green beverage. It was fresh, green, and okay, maybe a little chewy.  I’m planning on making lettuce wraps tonight to keep with my recovery from a weekend of awesome homemade mom food (my stomach can’t take any more stuffing!) so I’ll post those later.  Hope you’re having a great day!

BY the way, do you know about the Dr. Hauschka products? I have been using them for years even before going vegan. German makeup products. Do you know if they are vegan?

I haven’t tried any of them, but I have heard that a lot of people love the products. I found this on their site, “Dr.Hauschka Skin Care upholds holistic principals but does not ascribe to a vegetarian or vegan philosophy. Though we do no animal testing, and use no animal ingredients that require killing vertebrates such as collagen, elastin, placenta, hyaluronic acid or ceramides, several humanely obtained animal ingredients: lanolin, honey, propolis, beeswax and royal jelly are included in many Dr.Hauschka products. We also employ carmine and silk, two ingredients from insects. ” Hope that helps! 🙂
