My First Falafel And Vegan Tahini Sauce

April 9, 2010 by Keri

Not only was last night my first time making falafel, but also my first time eating falafel!  What can I say? I grew up in an area where Taco Bell is ethnic food.  Reading all about the deliciousness on your blogs, I always wanted to try falafel, but just never looked into making it.  Last weekend my mom gave me a box of falafel mix, which gave me a pretty good excuse to stop screwing around and make some falafel! (Falafel, falafel, falafel.)

Vegan Falafel Recipes

After making the mix, heating the oil, and forming the batter into mushy balls, I put them in the oil to fry. Placing the fried balls on a paper towel to soak off some of the oil and cool, I set out looking for a falafel sauce recipe.  Since I’d never had falafel, I definitely had no clue what falafel sauce should consist of or taste like!  Everything that I found suggested a tahini sauce combining tahini, lemon juice, water, and sea salt, so that’s what I decided to make.  While looking for vegan condiment recipes, I came across a lot of tasty looking falafel recipes, so I definitely be making it from scratch next time.

Vegan Condiment Recipes

Tahini Sauce
Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2-3 tablespoons water
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • pinch of sea salt

Stir lemon juice and garlic into tahini.  Add in water and salt and stir until smooth.  Enjoy!

Vegan Falafel Recipes

These were so delicious; I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on falafel! Now I have a little bit of food envy towards those of you with local falafel places, but I’ll just have to get over it though and make my own!  Have any of you ever tried making baked falafel?  I think that sounds pretty good as well and would use less oil.  Anyway, I hope you’re having a great day; I’ll be back later with my first-ever Vita-Mix post!

I forgot all about falafel! I have some chick pea flour…I would probably make it for the sole purpose of eating that tahini sauce 😀

I can’t believe you’ve never had falafel before! Your life has been changed for the better, no doubt! It comes out pretty well baked in the oven, too. That’s how I usually have it as it’s also less work, though of course it doesn’t taste quite as good 🙂

Everyone says that! I’m glad the blogging community showed me what I was missing. 🙂

  3. McKella says:

I’ve only had falafel once, but I have a recipe for homemade. I should dig that out next week.

  4. Oh yeahhh!! Ok I secretly love that box of falafel, it is unbelievably delicious. That looks amazing girl!!!

  5. Tiffany says:

Yum! I love falafel…hmm I haven’t had it in awhile, so maybe I’m due to make a batch. The tahini sauce sounds like it would be a really fantastic addition. I also like falafel with tzatziki (a yogurt-cucumber dressing), using vegan soy yogurt, of course. 🙂

I have never made falafel! I dont crave foods like that so i have never jumped on, but honestly that sauce looks amazing! love it!

    • Keri says:

Honestly I think the sauce would be amazing in just a lettuce wrap with some cucumber and other raw fillings too!

Your falafel looks street-style-good!! Damn, I’m not sure I could pull it off, but beautiful job! And a vita-mix post already? I’m crossing my fingers for ice cream. haha

    • Keri says:

Aww, thanks! Yeah, Amazon got the Vita-Mix here in A DAY! And either you’ve been stalking me or you think the ice cream is the neatest thing too…. 😀 (I’m guessing it’s the second.)

Like you, I had never had falafel before becoming vegan. We’re lucky enough to have a full-fledged Middle Eastern restaurant down the street with falafel, good wine, and the best hummus you’ve ever dreamed of. Come visit, and we’ll take you there!
