A Strange Day

April 7, 2010 by Keri

When I woke up this morning, my plans were to get in a quick workout, shower, and prepare my son’s breakfast for when he got up, but as I was pulling on my t-shirt there was a bright flash of light accompanied by a giant BANG!  And out went the power.  I looked out the window to see one of our beloved backyard squirrels standing at attention, startled by the noise.  The sky was dark and grey, but since the storm hadn’t started yet I had no idea what could have caused the transformer to blow.  We spent a couple of hours in the nearly dark house waiting for the power to come on when I started watching the men working behind our house.  And I looked at just at the wrong moment, or else I would have blissfully continued to have no idea what happened to cause the outage, but there was a big guy in a yellow hard hat carrying off one of our lifeless squirrel friends by its little paw.  I’m so sad; just yesterday I was out taking pictures of them playing!

By the time the power was back on it was almost time for lunch.  I made food for my husband and son first, and was putting their plates on the table just as the husband walked in the door for lunch, handed me a piece of paper and said, “Happy Anniversary”.  (Our anniversary is the 14th.) What?!  It was a printed receipt from an order placed on Amazon just minutes previously for a Vita-Mix!!  I was so surprised and confused that I forgot to even make myself lunch or eat.  In fact, I’ve been wandering around accomplishing nothing ever since then! Even this post is sort of wandering aimlessly, isn’t it?!  If you have a Vita-Mix (and it’s always felt like most of the food blogging community does), what are your favorite recipes or things to make? I want to be prepared with plans for things to make when it arrives!  I hope everyone is having a great day.  I’ll be back later with a (hopefully) more coherent dinner post.

Yay for the vita-mix!! When I got mine for Christmas, I was most excited to make nut butter & hummus 😀

  2. Eve says:

Aw, the poor squirrel! Re: the vita mix!!: best gift ever!!! I would actually pine away without my (ultra smooth!) kale+banana+cocoa smoothie every morning. What can I say, I’m a creature of habit! Banana soft serve from my vitamix is divine, as is….soup, hummus, various dips and sauces, and so on and so forth. You won’t want to chew again! 🙂

    • Keri says:

I literally laughed out loud about “You’ll won’t want to chew again.” I really need to get some glass straws then! 😀

  3. Amy says:

I am so freaking jealous of your Vita-Mix! Please let us know if you like it and how much you use it. I’ve been contemplating investing in one, but just haven’t been ready to pull the trigger…

P.S. I’m sad for the squirrel. I get sad whenever I see a squirrel on the side of the road. 🙁

    • Keri says:

I’ll be sure to let you know how I like it. I honestly NEVER thought I’d own one!
Road squirrels make me sad too, but these were “our” squirrels, so I’m especially sad. Poor guy. 🙁

  4. You will LOVE it!!! I use mine on a daily basis from my morning smoothies, to soup and of course my almond milk. YAY for surprises! =)

    • Keri says:

I’m so excited! He just told me it’s arriving tomorrow. I’m probably going to just have to stare at it in disbelief for awhile! 😀

  5. Mucho vitamix envy!!! 🙂 Happy Anniversary!

    • Keri says:

Thank you! 🙂 I understand; I had VitaMix envy just this morning on Happy Herbivore’s post!

  6. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says:

CONGRATS and it will CHANGE your LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Anniv of course, too 🙂

Honestly Ive had mine for about 2 yrs. Anything you want to know, ask. you will make alot of mush, smoothies, and purees at first b/c you will be scared of the power!!! but then you will totally rock out everything else!

    • Keri says:

Wow, change my life? Awesome!! 🙂 I am a bit nervous about not knowing what to actually do with it at first. I guess it comes with a recipe book though? Maybe I’ll start there. Haha. Thank you- I’m sure I’ll have questions!

That’s love, you lucky woman! The other day I nearly threw my blender out the window and started to pray for a vita-mix to arrive at my doorstep. Unfortunately that’s a long time away, but I can’t wait to see the meals you come up with!! Hooray!

    • Keri says:

I thought it was a looong time away for us also, but it turns out he’d been doing side jobs and saving money for it in his own account! So sweet! 🙂
I feel your pain on throwing blenders from windows. We would have saved money just to get a VitaMix in the first place with all of the horrible blenders we went through!
