30 Day Sugar Challenge

February 20, 2010 by Keri

When Andria of Veg Is Sexy tweeted about her plans to  do a 30 day sugar cleanse, inviting others to join, I immediately felt a twinge of guilt.  I have gotten into far too much sugar lately. Becoming a part of this fabulous online vegan community has inspired me to create and try new products and recipes; have you seen some of those delicious dessert posts complete with fabulous pictures?!  If anything, I became inspired by “See?! I can have amazing treats and still be vegan!”.  And that’s wonderful, it really is, but I really don’t want to cancel out the health benefits of my rich, whole veggie lifestyle with heaps of refined sugar.  So I told Andria to count me in on her Super Sexy Sugar Cleanse.

Now, the word cleanse scares me.  It makes me think of drinking nothing but maple syrup and lemon Pledge, or whatever it is those cleanses call for, and while that may be a healthy plan (I have no idea), it just isn’t for me.  However, this isn’t an exclusion plan.  We still get plenty of natural sugars in fruits, veggies, grains, and so on.  Everyone taking the Super Sexy Sugar Cleanse challenge may have their own variations on the plan, but one thing is universal:  No refined sugars or added sugars.  In other words, maul the fruit section at your local grocery store, but avoid the cupcake glory at the bakery counter (and the sweetener in your latte).  Also, Andria make the point that it’s important not to replace sugar with artificial sweeteners because that’s just another toxic bad habit that should be avoided.  I actually hadn’t even thought of it because I’ve been sensitive to aspartame and the likes my entire life, triggering blinding migraines if I unknowingly consume the smallest amount in a treat, so I’m glad she brought it up.

If you would like to follow everyone participating through the entire challenge, check back with me, Andria, Jessica, Natalie, and Kimberly.  I’m sure we will also have lots to say about it on Twitter, so it would be fun to follow me, Andria, Natalie, and Kimberly there.  Also, we would love to have you join us! We are starting Monday, February 22, so there is still time to hop on board!  Just leave a comment below and we would love to add you to the list.  Doing it together is going to turn something not-so-pleasant into a really fun experience!
